Out of the box, neither Magento Community, nor Magento Enterprise allow importing products from a particuar file or another ecommerce platform.

On the web one can find quite a number of instructions on how to import products using the .csv tables or other methods explained. However, no such instructions have been officially approved by Magento developers. Moreover, most of such guides can only serve as a not-so-good time savior as one will still need to add the product information manually making all the manipulations questionable.

There is quite a number of extensions offering the functionality to ease the product import/creation burden.
