Yes, as a possible workaround, the following scenario can be used:
Shopping Cart Price rules can be applied to the 1st subscription order and the discount may cover 100% of the initial payment.

After adding an item to the cart and creating an order the initial fee specified for a subscription may change slightly (within $ 0.1). Changes in the initial fee depend on the number of options in the bundle and the qty of products in these options. You can also use the Advanced Pricing options. You can read more about advanced pricing options in the M2 Subscription Products on Backend section of the Manual.

Is it possible to subscribe a customer to a product from backend?

Admin can create only a free subscription trial from the backend. A customer can only subscribe to a product from the frontend.

Unfortunately, the extension does not allow that. This limitation results from the way the module interacts with the payment processors. It is only possible for a customer to subscribe to a product from the frontend.

No, it doesn't. Currently, checkout with multiple addresses is not supported. When there is a subscription product in the cart, the option Checkout With Multiple Addresses will be hidden.

No, it does not. Unfortunately, due to some peculiarities of the interactions between the module and the payment gateways, the multi-address shipping option is not supported by the extension. When there is a subscription product in the cart, the 'Checkout With Multiple Addresses' option will be hidden.

How does the extension work with configurable products? Is it possible to have different subscriptions against the simple child products or is the subscription only managed from the configurable product itself?

If the product is Disabled, then the subscription is canceled after several attempts. If the subscription includes several products and at least one of them is Out of Stock / Disabled / Deleted, then the subscription is canceled after several attempts to make a payment.

The price of an active subscription will change when the price of a product changes.
If the product is Disabled, then the subscription is canceled after several attempts. If the subscription includes several products and at least one of them is Out of Stock / Disabled / Deleted, then the subscription is canceled after several attempts to make a payment.

If the price got changed but a customer has not made any adjustments in their Subscription Plan, Shipping Address or Payment Details afterwards, the recurring orders will be placed with the old product price. Otherwise, the price will be changed after the adjustments mentioned are made.
As for disabling a product, if any of the subscription items gets Out of Stock, Disabled or Deleted, the subscription will be cancelled after several attempts to create an order.
